About shiva and MaaTulsi

For the death of demon Jalandhar, it was very important for Vrinda to end her dharma of pativrata.  As the atrocities of demon king Jalandhar started increasing, for the welfare of the people, Lord Vishnu took the form of demon Jalandhar and broke Vrinda’s dharma of fidelity to her husband.  When Vrinda came to know that Lord Vishnu had broken her duty of chastity, she cursed Lord Vishnu.Worship of Lord Shiva has been given special importance in Hindu religion.  In the scriptures, Bholenath has been described as very innocent.  One may have to make hard efforts to please other gods, but this is not the case with Bholenath.  It is believed that whichever devotee worships Mahadev with a true heart, Lord Shiva’s blessings always remain upon him.  Lord Shiva becomes extremely pleased with his devotees just by doing a simple puja, offering water and wood apple leaves and bestows blessings on them.

There is mention in the scriptures about offering things of Lord Shiva’s likes and dislikes.  Just as Lord Shiva is very fond of Bel Patra and Dhatura, similarly there are many things which should not be offered to Lord Shiva.  There is also a Tulsi among them.  It is believed that Tulsi should not be offered to Lord Shiva.  By offering Tulsi, the devotees may have to fall victim to his fierce form.  Very few people would know why Tulsi should not be offered to Lord Shiva.  Let us tell you today the mythological story behind it.

This is the mythological story
According to a legend, Tulsi’s name in her previous birth was Vrinda.  Who was the wife of a demon named Jalandhar.  Jalandhar was a part of Lord Shiva.  But due to his bad deeds he was born in a demon clan.  Asurraj Jalandhar was very proud of his bravery.  Everyone was very upset with him.  But still no one was able to kill him.  Because his wife Vrinda was a devoted woman.  Because of whose majesty the demon remained safe.

When Vrinda came to know that Lord Vishnu had broken her duty of chastity, she cursed Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu cursed

Angered by Vrinda’s curse, Lord Vishnu told that he was protecting her from the demon Jalandhar and he cursed Vrinda to turn into wood.  Here, after Vrinda’s devotional religion was destroyed, Lord Shiva killed the demon king Jalandhar.  Due to the curse of Lord Vishnu, Vrinda later became Tulsi.  It is said that Tulsi is cursed and her husband was killed by Lord Shiva, hence Tulsi is not offered in Shiva worship.

Apart from Tulsi, conch shell, coconut water, turmeric, roli are also not included in Shiva worship.  Apart from this, Kaner, lotus, red colored flowers, Ketaki and Kevada flowers are also not offered to Lord Shiva.  It is said that by doing this Bholenath gets angry and people’s wishes remain unfulfilled.  Apart from this, people may have to face many kinds of troubles.
